Role
The Senior Designer is an interior architectural designer working within a project team, reporting to the Project Manager and/or Managing Director.
This position is handson across all stages of a project, from developing design concepts and presentation/bid material through to supporting bidding and negotiation in the early phases. The Senior Designer leads the project team in producing all construction documentation, ensuring information is delivered accurately, on time and in line with internal processes, external requirements, and overall project programmes, while coordinating closely with the internal FF&E team and external consultants. A strong grasp of project timelines and key issue dates for documentation to our client and contractors is essential.
The Senior Designer's involvement runs from project inception through to completion, acting as a key point of contact and daytoday coordinator during the construction administration phase.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the development of overarching design concepts.
- Assist in developing schematic design from established project programmes and initial concepts, with a solid understanding of programme, budget and our client's needs.
- Translate schematic design into clear, coordinated designdevelopment drawings.
- Support the Project Manager/Managing Director in maintaining continuity of design intent through all construction documentation.
- Prepare and contribute to presentation material, ensuring high graphic quality and consistency, and participate in presentations as required.
- Coordinate interior architectural documentation with the work of external consultants and architects.
- Support the Project Designer/Managing Director across all aspects of their responsibilities.
- Work with the FF&E designer to ensure seamless coordination with FF&E requirements.
- Coordinate schedules, staff utilisation/work planning and budget requirements with the Project Manager.
- Coordinate with Project Interior Designers on all required schedules (finishes, sanitary ware, ironmongery, etc.).
- Coordinate the efforts of design and production team members in finalising and documenting the project.
- Review information for compliance with relevant codes and standards.
- Maintain records of submittals, samples, shop drawings, etc., and ensure timely review by the appropriate team members.
- Ensure the team provides responses, drawings and clarifications promptly during bidding/negotiation and construction administration phases.
- Work with the Project Manager/Managing Director and Principal in Charge on all scheduling and staff/hour allocations.
- Safeguard graphic quality, consistency and accuracy across all construction documentation.
- Produce architectural specifications with the design team, in line with project contract requirements.
- Maintain appropriate contact with contractors as required.
- Ensure that drawings are fully coordinated and suitable for construction.
- Check the practicality and buildability of details and solutions.
- Understand and monitor contract responsibilities during both the construction documentation and construction administration phases.
- Support and guide Junior Designers in office standards, policies and best practices.
- Demonstrate strong skills in AutoCAD, PowerPoint and Photoshop.
Authority
- Review and adjust construction documentation to maintain design intent, ensuring any FF&E changes are agreed with the FF&E designer.
- Delegate and assign specific tasks to project team members.
- Work with the Project Manager/Managing Director to allocate hours and fee budgets during the construction documentation phase.
- Request additional or modified design information where it impacts programme, budget or delivery.
